Greetings and Latest News from The Hide

"My wife Carol and I cannot speak highly enough about your lodge and the staff.
Everything from the food, the accommodation, the common areas and the camp in general were first rate. The staff could not be faulted; eating with them was a great experience …we got to share some of their stories. We were lucky to see the 'Big Five', although we didn't get to see the Leopard until we were on our way out of the concession after our stay. It was in the middle of the road and stalking a Steenbok. I think we saved the little guy's life.”
~Chris & Carol, Australia, June 2005~

“What an unforgettable experience only to be made more unforgettable by your hospitality, professionalism and unique flair to make our stay the most memorable of the trip. I cannot wait to re visit 'The Hide' and experience your passion for this magnificent spot on God's Green Earth. I think everyone on our trip felt much the same. I'll see you all soon in the next year or so and that's a promise.”
~Ian Jones, Australia, June 2005~

NEWS FROM CAMP

Elephants are now daily visitors to the pan in front of the Hide, usually arriving around dinner and continuing all night in a steady stream. Buffalo herds are also being seen on a more regular basis and a few ‘dagga boys’ frequent the pan. Rogan the resident male Lion is often heard at night bellowing in near proximity to the camp, a great sound to hear while lying in bed. This often causes the hyenas and jackals to join in a symphony, which is often very topical over breakfast!

Along the Kennedy vlei, which is our most travelled route, 4 of the Big Five are often seen, with the elusive Leopard spoiling the completion. However, Cheetah are now being seen along the same route, with another pair sighted at Makwa.

Sable, Eland, Roan, Waterbuck, Ostrich are frequently sighted on drives, while volumes of Giraffe, Zebra, Kudu, Wildebeest, Impala, amusing Warthogs and troops of Baboons can be watched daily around the Hide waterhole.

Around the camp we now have eight resident bushbuck that spend the day looking for any greenery left, and at night consuming the grass in front of the main A-frame and Barry’s house.

We had as little rain this year as in the 1992 drought, according to records kept at Sinamatella by National Parks. This means the animals will continue to heavily congregate around the waterholes and the photographic opportunities will be amazing.

Barry & Bridget continue to oversee upgrades to the rooms in the way of new décor and linen without losing any of the “vintage Africa” feel all of you have strictly told us to preserve! We’re also thrilled to announce the arrival of a revamped Land Cruiser for drives.

OTHER SIGHTINGS

• A lioness came to drink at the Hide waterhole one day in August at dusk, breathlessly watched at close quarters by guests in one of the “hides”!
• The same lioness and her hunting partner made a spectacular ‘double dinner number’ on two young wildebeest they ambushed just beyond the Hide waterhole. All evidence seen first hand by guests on the early morning walk!

Until next time and thanks for all your support!

Barry & Bridget, Lorraine, Beck & staff
