NEWS FROM CAMP
The winter months have arrived, and with it large herds
of Elephant and Buffalo, as the natural water in the
Park dries up. After a really mediocre rainfall this
last wet season, it will be a long dry year for all
animals. Our two engines pumping in the Park at Kenedy1
and Kennedy2 Pans are now operating 24 hours a day,
and can barely keep up with the demand for water.
Some exciting news is that The Hide
is in the process of supporting another two pumps in
Hwange, bringing the total to five. We have also begun
more diverse walking safaris within the Park,
making for exciting encounters for guests on foot. Walking
behind Kennedy 2 pan is proving to be very popular,
especially with all the elephants around. Watching them
push and shove trees to get at the acacia pods from
a few meters away has provided great photography.
SIGHTINGS
• Rogan the Lion whose territory
includes the Hide concession was seen on a Giraffe kill
during the night drive recently together with 2 of his
lionesses that now have 5 tiny cubs – what a great
sight!
• A male Rhino has been seen
along the Kennedy vlei on a number of occasions, and
I have walked up to him with guests twice.
• Nicholas saw the Big Five in
one afternoon last week with a delighted group of Australians,
managing to see a leopard at Sinanga at last light.
• There are Elephants also drinking
at the pan in front of the camp virtually every night
now, and a group of around 200 Buffalo has been seen
drinking here a few times.
• Roan and Gemsbok
are being seen at Ngweshla as well as a few ostrich,
which have wandered into the area.
• Andrew who has just joined us found a Pangolin
on the concession, the first I have seen in 8 years!
• Sable, Kudu, Giraffe, Wildebeest, Zebra, Impala,
Baboon, Warthogs, Bushbuck and Waterbuck are also regular
drinkers at the Hide's pan in front of camp.
SECURITY ISSUES
For those of you outside Zimbabwe, you’ll be flabbergasted
at what’s happening in the towns and cities in
what authorities call a “clean-up exercise”.
We express our sincere grief to all those Zimbabweans
who’ve been left homeless in the middle of winter,
often with all belongings “confiscated”
or destroyed as well.
From a traveller’s perspective, the inclination
would be to cancel or be persuaded against visiting
Zimbabwe – however we’d like to strongly
appeal to you as Agents especially, who know Zim well,
to encourage people to continue their travels here and
make the difference by supporting lodges and
hotels in Zimbabwe – you are directly supporting
the livelihoods of solid Zimbabweans. The security
of tourists in tourist destinations is not and has never
been an issue these last 5 years; please preserve that
perspective.
On a positive note, The Hide remains an oasis of tranquillity
amidst the turmoil, with what we believe is the best
guiding team in the country offering the true Classic
Africa safari experience you’ve always relied
on.
Until next time and thanks for all your support!
Barry & Bridget, Lorraine, Beck & staff
