Dear Friends, Guests and Agents,
Its time again for an update of what has been
going on at The Hide in the Hwange National
Park. We are all getting geared up for the busier
months in the year and look forward to meeting
new guests and welcoming back old friends.
Most of our Land Rovers have received a much
needed face lift after years of faithful service
and are now as good as new, with their engine
overhauls, new paint, new seat covers…..the
list is endless. Our “Landies”,
which supplement our Toyota Land Cruiser fleet,
all have covered seating to protect you from
the harsh rays of the sun and from which you
can observe the diverse game population in Hwange.
To view game from one of the safari vehicles
is not the only way to observe game. We also
conduct early morning and late afternoon game
walks! But then maybe it is better to relax
in camp and watch the waterhole because this
where exiting events have happened this past
week........
Wild Stories
A small pack of wild dogs (Lycaon pictus) recently
killed a kudu right in front of the camp at
our waterhole in full view of our very exited
guests. The pack of dogs had to work hard for
their meal but they succeeded after chasing
the female kudu through the waterhole and after
a short struggle the three wild dogs were feasting.
Daffy took the guest around the waterhole where
they were able to watch the whole event from
the comfort of a broken tree trunk. What an
experience this must have been!

Our guests watching the kill with Daffy (left) looking very pleased with himself!
You will notice in the photos that two of the
wild dogs are collared. The Painted Dog Conservation
was founded in 1989 and is based in Hwange.
They monitor various packs of wilddog in the
Hwange National Park with the use of radio collars
and have done a tremendous job in reducing the
prejudice towards dogs. For more information
about the project Click here

The kill..........
Earlier this morning I received a phone call
from Lauren in camp letting me know that five
lions had killed a wildebeest at about 6 am
this morning, again at the waterhole right in
front of the camp. I do not have any photos
of this event yet but I will include these in
the next Newsletter.
Game viewing in general has been very exciting
with regular lion, rhino, giraffe and elephant
sightings. During the dry season, which starts
in June/July, the foliage and cover is reduced
and therefore animals can be spotted more easily.
Please take note that the above events are true
but rare and are not everyday occurrences. We
can not promise that this will happen while
you are visiting us…..but who knows it
may be your lucky day.

Dont' you just love the little fellow on the left!!
Best Regards from Barry, Bridget, Lauren, Lorraine, Angus, Gavin, Maha and everyone at The Hide.

Guest Comment
Just wanted to thank you for a great four days.
Words can not express the experiences provided
by this magnificent place. It was better then
we could have ever dreamed. From the amount
of animals seen on foot, in vehicles, and right
at the Hide, to the accommodation and food;
everything was perfect. Our guides Foster and
Nicholas were wonderful; we learnt so much and
had a great time with them. All your staff were
fantastic and very attentive to our needs. We
loved our tent especially the glass doors that
allowed us to lay in bed and see the animals
at the water hole. What a great experience to
meet so many guests from around the world.

Farewell and thank you
Jenny Don, our accountant in Harare is leaving The Hide Safaris at the end of July, after being part of the team for more than 2 ½ years. Thank you Jenny for all you hard work over the years! She will be following her dream and turning her hobby into her job. She will be pursuing a career in photography and we wish her all the best for the future. Good luck Jenny!
